Kiakoura Fishing trip dec12th-14th 2006

This is one of the activities from Manawatu Colleges activity weeks .

These are normally done in the last week of the school year over 3 days

This year 7 Adults and 14 Students from the 3rd and 4th Forms, Traveled from Foxton in the North Island to Kiakoura in the South Island of New Zealand.
This involved a road trip on the Tuesday ,Starting at 5.30 am by 2 Vans and a 4 wheel drive Suv. We stopped at Porirua to Pick up the Diver for the trip then straight in to wellington for the 8.30am Ferry ride across Cook straight to Picton, This takes about 3 hours .
Then a 2 Hour drive to the camp in Kiakoura.
unfortunately the water was to rough and Dirty to do any Diving or Fishing the first day. So it was a bit of Site seeing in Kiakoura and relaxing at the camp.
We managed to get into the water on the Wednesday. For a catch of Kina's and a Few Paua. And everyone had a good swim.
We stayed at a Camp site just out of Kiakoura. At a place called Mangamaunu

this is a Just 2 buildings a Kitchen/ Showers /toilets /Sleeping Quarters ,Plus a main Building for Meetings and Sleeping. "With the sea just across the road". This is run by a Trust ,and has 800 acres of farms plus heaps of Native bush.
Thursday it was a Quick clean up of the camp then we were of on our way on the Journey Home.
On the way we stopped to have a look at a Seal colony just of the side of the road. The sea was about 50 metres down the side of a steep cliff ,But the seals had no problem climbing up to nearly the road.
When we arrived in picton , We had lunch in the park just across from the Ferry terminal.
Then a nice easy Ferry ride across the Cook Straight touch wood we had a good trip both ways weather wise.
then a slow drive home."traffic jams all the way to Waikane".
